What is a Dental Emergency?

Taking care of your teeth is integral to preventing oral health issues. Even if you are diligent in your oral care routine, however, emergencies can still happen. There are several issues that qualify as a dental emergency, including:

  • Gums that are swollen or infected.
  • Cavities.
  • Teeth that have been chipped or cracked.
  • Teeth that are infected, or abscessed.

Dental emergencies can cause a significant amount of pain and discomfort, and they can also put your oral, and overall, health at risk. When you experience a dental emergency, it is important that you be seen right away. Putting off a dental emergency until your next scheduled cleaning and exam, or ignoring it altogether, will only lead to more serious issues. Eventually, bacteria can enter your bloodstream. When this happens, you are at a much higher risk for developing serious health complications including such things as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Emergency Exams

An emergency exam is also commonly referred to as a limited exam. This is a problem-focused exam that is aimed at diagnosing your specific oral health concern, rather than evaluating your entire mouth. We discuss your symptoms and perform a visual exam of the inside of your mouth. Instead of checking every part of your mouth, we will take a look at the teeth or the gums near the area that is causing you discomfort.

The goal of an emergency exam is to diagnose the issue and recommend treatment. Depending upon the diagnosis, you may be able to receive treatment same day, or you may be prescribed antibiotics to clear up an infection before you receive your necessary treatment. The emergency exam itself is free. However, we do charge for dental X-rays if they are needed.

Other Reasons for an Emergency Exam

Emergency, or limited, exams can also be used for other reasons as well.

  • Getting a second opinion. Perhaps you have received an initial diagnosis from another dentist, but you are not satisfied. If you want a second opinion on your original diagnosis, we can provide that for you with an emergency exam. If you have X-rays from your original exam, you should bring those with you when you come in.
  • A consultation for orthodontic treatment, dental implants, cosmetic dental treatments and more. Being limited exams, we can focus on your specific issue, whether it is misaligned teeth, missing teeth, or imperfections in your teeth, and recommend the appropriate treatment for your specific needs.

If you are suffering from a dental emergency, getting treatment right away is essential. With same day emergency services, and free emergency exams for new patients, we can help you to restore your oral health and prevent serious consequences.
